Open, Closed, Open. This is Humanity.
Death is perhaps the only certainty in life, yet it remains elusive and unknown. The cemetery, the final resting place of the departed, is a space of memory, love, unity, pain, and solace for those who remain. Rituals, which accompany us throughout our lives, are most profoundly present at certain milestones, with death being the most significant among them. Through a reimagined design of the burial space, this project seeks to create an environment that evokes the emotions of visitors and connects past, present, and future while honoring traditional rituals and sacred places.
Entering the World – The Ritual
Rituals, both personal and communal, are integral to our lives, providing moments for reflection and transformation. They begin with preparation and anticipation, guiding us toward a deeper connection with ourselves. The descent into the earth marks a transition from everyday life into a sacred, intimate space—one that allows us to reconnect with our loved ones and experience the ritual on both an emotional and symbolic level.
The Path (Into the Unknown)
"The Path into the Unknown" is the passage leading from the eulogy hall to the burial spaces, symbolizing the transition from the familiar world to the depths of the unknown. Its design fosters closeness among participants, allowing them to lean on one another in these difficult moments and experience a unique sense of human connection and mutual support before the final farewell.
The Sacred Grove – Life in the Shadow of Death
The transition from the ritualistic world to daily life brings with it profound personal changes. The gradual emergence from the depths of the earth into the light leads to the Sacred Grove, where natural elements such as trees, water, and sky blend with minimalist architecture that organically integrates into the landscape. The grove is a space where one can find tranquility and reflection, fostering a deep sense of connection with oneself, loved ones, and the universe as a whole.
